The concept of physician as patient is nothing new. What is unique about this story is how I handled the aftermath of a runaway defibrillator and the hilarious events that subsequently occurred -- when I treated posttraumatic stress with a magnet.

Thwack was submitted to “The Examined Life Journal” as an essay several years ago. The editors suggested I submit a poster for their narrative medicine conference. Narrative Medicine is defined by Jason Lewis, the program director, as “exploring the connection between the arts and medicine for patients, practitioners, and educators.”

I had no idea how to turn the story into a poster, but a good friend of mine, Dr. Dana Gage, an internist and an excellent writer, suggested I put it in comic book format.

I had three weeks to prepare the display and hired a local artist to draw the story in caricature. It was well received and many attendees suggested that I publish it as a graphic novel.

The story has since been expanded, and after much searching, I found Michael Lorenz, a brilliant and intuitive artist. I ran into his parents at a wedding where I lamented that I couldn’t find an artist for my story. Mike’s dad told me about his son’s work, and after I reviewed his portfolio, I knew Mike was perfect for the project.

I loved comic books as a kid and had an extensive library of Marvel and DC comics. My collection dwindled as I gave them away, sold them off, and lost them over the years to my ex-friends’ sticky fingers. Now in my sixties I regret those decisions.

I never realized how much work went into a graphic novella. Now I know.
